HansemEUG Ready for General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), approved in 2016 by the EU Parliament, is set to take effect May 25. This regulation will have a profound impact on the way businesses and other organizations collect, store, and use personal data—not only organizations based in the European Union, but those worldwide that offer goods or services to EU residents and monitor their behavior. Furthermore, the GDPR applies not only to “data controllers”—for example, a business that maintains records on its customers—but also to “data processors,” third parties that process data on behalf of data controllers.

The good news is that HansemEUG is prepared for this change and is already in full compliance. Our clients and partners can rest assured that all the required security and privacy mechanisms are firmly in place.

Also known as EU Regulation 2016/679, the GDPR is a legal framework that restricts the collection and processing of personal information about EU residents. It sets forth principles regarding data management and privacy rights for individuals in the EU who are “data subjects.” The GDPR also guarantees such fundamental rights as the right to access personal data about oneself and the “right to be forgotten.” More information about the GDPR, including a link to the full text, can be found here.

What’s significant about the GDPR is its worldwide reach: Any organization that processes and maintains data pertaining to EU residents will be affected, regardless of its physical location. What’s more, the GDPR holds data processors and data controllers equally liable. This means you’re responsible if a noncompliant third party processes data on your behalf, and you might get hit with a substantial fine. Fines for serious violations can be as high as 20 million euros or 4 percent of your organization’s global revenue, whichever is higher.

Our Data Solutions team has already implemented the necessary changes to the resource management system and the project management process to protect individuals’ privacy and ensure the security of all personal data. We’ve upgraded our servers to incorporate all the required security and privacy mechanisms.

At HansemEUG, we know how important it is to stay up to date with industry regulations, as noncompliance can have serious repercussions for us and for our clients and partners. We’re proud to say that we always act fast and make it a priority to stay ahead of other language service providers in this regard. We will continue our efforts to lead the way in the language service industry, both at home in Korea and throughout the world.
